Using a darker and lighter tint, a contour palette is utilized to define or sculpt facial features. This method makes it easier to highlight facial features such as the cheekbones, nose, forehead, and jawline. While it may have begun with the face, contouring has evolved to become a necessity for highlighting other body parts, such as the shoulders and abdomen.
As opposed to foundation and concealer, which are matched to the skin tone to produce an even texture, an eyeshadow palette is used to highlight the shadowed areas of the face, giving the face depth and character. Only stage actors and performers have utilized contouring to emphasize the depth of their performances over the years. When in the spotlight, the actors were contoured for reasons related to their characters.
